Firearms cause violence and deaths in Latin America

Over half a million deaths a year, nearly half of them caused by firearms, have been globally reported in 2010-2015 period, as reported by the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons.

According to a study, 875 million of this type of weapons are currently circulating worldwide, 75 percent of which is in the hands of civilians.

The investigation reported that eight Latin American and Caribbean cities are listed among the world´s top-10 cities with the highest number of murders, a situation closely linked to drug trafficking, organized crime and to gang violence.

In view of this increasing reality, the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) will host this forum on Friday and Saturday, in order to analyze strategies, pledges and actions to fight this scourge.

This gathering will be attended by over 40 regional delegates, including parliamentarians, international experts, members of civil society and the diplomatic community, as well as government officials.

It also seeks to contribute to the achievement of more peaceful and developed societies through parliamentary action against armed violence for greater human security, according to the PARLATINO.

This Forum is the only international platform for parliamentarians of different political parties, which is aimed at reducing and fighting armed violence, by focusing specifically on small arms and light weapons.
