Lima group: Nicolás Maduro's presence at the Summit of the Americas "is not welcome"

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Cayetana Aljovín, expressed today that, after the events that are taking place in Venezuela, the presence of the president of that country, Nicolás Maduro, is no longer welcome at the next Summit of the Americas, to be held in Lima.

After the meeting of the foreign ministers of the member countries of the Lima Group, the minister said that this decision of the Peruvian Government has been supported by the other ministers of Foreign Affairs of the group gathered in Lima.

"I want to inform that the Government of Peru, with the support of the Lima Group and in accordance with the declaration of Quebec in 2001 (...) decided to express, with respect to the invitation of President Nicolás Maduro to the Summit of the Americas in Lima, that his presence will no longer be welcome to this meeting, "Minister Aljovín said.

The head of Peruvian diplomacy, recalled that the Quebec declaration mentions that any alteration in the democratic order in a state of the hemisphere constitutes an insurmountable obstacle for the participation of said government in the process of the Summit of the Americas.

The Lima Group, in its joint statement, said this afternoon to respect the decision of Peru to reconsider the participation of the Government of Venezuela in the VIII Summit of the Americas, in Lima.

So far there was no confirmation of the presence of Maduro at the Summit of the Americas, however, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, said that the president of Venezuela will attend this meeting.

The Government of Peru today called a meeting of foreign ministers of the Lima Group, before the decision of the electoral authorities of Venezuela to advance the presidential elections for next April 22.
