Argentina: Specialist denies that "the detachment of the century" in the Perito Moreno Glacier is coming

A report from Los Glaciares National Park of Argentina reported last January 29 that the level of the Rico arm of Lake Argentino reached 11 meters above its natural elevation after the ice dam that forms the advance of the Perito Moreno glacier on the peninsula of Magallanes, which led to the announcement that this could anticipate "the greatest break of the century", although now this has been questioned by specialists.

Los Glaciares National Park covers an area of close to 600,000 hectares and 47 glaciers are detached from this large ice field. The breaking of the Perito Moreno glacier and the possibility of navigating towards it and contemplating it closely, or walking on it thanks to the treks that are organized for this purpose, have called in recent years visitors from all over the world.

Consulted by LANA, the geophysical engineer Pedro Skvarca, which since 1964 is dedicated to glaciology and is one of the most important in Argentina, said it is "risky" forecast when the break will occur of the Perito Moreno Glacier, only by the levels of the Rico arm and the Icebergs Canal in the Lake Argentine and without having other information about the Glaciers "It is very risky to make a forecast without information of the glaciers that we could have today if we had invested a little more in science, "said Skvarca.

In 2004 and 2016 that mark was located at 10.40 meters, and the ruptures occurred in the month of March. Anyway, it is far from the 19 meters of 1988, when one of the most shocking breaks occurred.

Skvarca considered "fundamental to know what happens in the upper part of the glacier, the accumulation zone of the ice field, because it is what affects and produces the endications ".

Born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Skvarca made numerous researches on Perito Moreno together with colleagues from Japan and Austria.

In relation to the next break in the glacier, a whole made of enormous social impact for Argentina, the arm growth does not involve a break imminent, far from it "the greatest of the century", as they announced some "that is to do futurology: it could be a long time before the glacier break, is in the normal process and nobody knows when it's going to finish ", finished Skvarca.
